The Onyx EP
The Onyx EP is my foray into a bit of risk and a lot more fun.
I generally like my songs speaking for themselves, but these ones demand that their stories be shared.
Track # 1: San Pedro Sula
I read a gripping article a few years ago about the effects of the drug trade in Honduras since the 90s, and the full sections of one of its largest cities, San Pedro Sula, that are now run by gangs. It is (or at least was just then) the murder capital of the world.
The article featured a morgue owner, who daily watches desperate mothers come look for their sons there after they don’t come home; they expect to find them dead. 30 years ago, he said, it was all elderly people coming into the morgue; now under 30 is the main demographic he sees brought in. The article ended with the haunting quote by that pained mortician: “The devil lives in San Pedro Sula.”
You can’t make this stuff up. So I wrote a song.
Track # 2: I Am A Lover
Think late-1800s-sailor-girlfriend waiting for her lover to come home from his months at sea, always watching the horizon every day for some sign of his ship, always hoping against hope he will come back. A woman's fierce, undying fidelity is the song's solid core.
Track # 3: Always Bleed
More classic me. Just a sweet, sad, honest song about love being HARD and always seeming to ask everything and more of us--more than we can handle, but as much as we somehow find it in us to keep giving.
